Fiji police cancel International Women's Day march

8:02 pm on 7 March 2013

Fiji police have cancelled a permit for a march by the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre on Friday night.

The so-called Reclaim the Night march was to mark International Women's Day.

The police say they have received information that there are threats to public order and the march may represent a significant security risk both for the wider public and those involved.

No details have been given but police say the women are invited to resubmit their application to hold the march at a later date.

The UN theme for this year's Women's Day is 'Time for action to end violence against women'.

A recent study shows 64 percent of women in Fiji have experienced violence in an intimate relationship, higher than the worldwide average of one in three.
