A Kiribati MP has challenged the President, Anote Tong, to take him to court over his allegedly defamatory comments.

The MP, Tebuai Uaai for the oppostion Karikirakean Te I-Kiribati party, says he has written two letters to the President repeating his comments and asking him to challenge his statement in court.

The Kiribati Independent reports that in Paliament in December, Mr Tebuai accused the President of theft.

President Tong then asked Mr Tebuai to request the removal of his parliamentary privilege so he could challenge the accusation in court, which he did.

The Office of the President has issued a statement, saying that it has received letters from the MP, but it can't make any comment until the President returns to Kiribati this week.
