The MP for Angoram in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province, Ludwig Schulze, has passed away.

The newspaper, The National, reports that Schulze died last Friday at the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby after battling an illness.

The only member of the Pangu Pati to enter parliament after last year's general elections, Schulze sat in the opposition benches.

He first entered parliament in 1991 representing the people of Angoram, before losing the seat to Arthur Somare in 1997 and then defeating him to reclaim it last year.
