Papua New Guinea police say they need statements from four Australian witnesses before proceeding with charges against 18 asylum seekers accused of fighting on Manus Island.

The 18 had been expected to appear in court in the Manus capital, Lorengau, yesterday.

The charges against the 18 relate to two alleged fights at the centre, one on Christmas Eve and another in late January.

The Manus provincial police commander Inspector Alex Ndrasal says police need statements from four Australian service providers at the temporary tent facility, who are currently in Australia, before they can proceed.
