PNG call to repeal Sorcery Act

1:42 pm on 18 March 2013

Papua New Guinea's Constitutional and Law Reform Commission has recommended that the country's Sorcery Act be repealed.

The recommendation stems from the commission's just completed review of the 1971 Act.

EM TV reports the Commission's secretary Eric Kwa as saying the Act is no longer relevant and should be repealed because of the difficulty in providing evidence in sorcery-related cases.

Mr Kwa says the Village Court Act will deal with an alleged sorcerer under traditional customs, while the killing of an alleged sorcerer will be considered a criminal act.
