Kiribati President dismisses MPs stance on parliamentary privilege

6:47 pm on 18 March 2013

The President of Kiribati has dismissed calls by an opposition MP to clear his name in court.

Anote Tong says the MP is making a fool of himself and the public when he said that he had withdrawn his parliamentary privilege.

Earlier, MP Tebuai Uaai explained that he had withdrawn his privilege so the President could sue him in court for calling him a thief in parliament last year.

However, President Tong says the MP knew that he was protected under the parliamentary privilege, and he also knew that he couldn't be sued.

The MP says he has circulated a letter among several government ministers, repeating his allegations against Mr Tong.

Meanwhile, Mr Tong has told the Kiribati Independent newspaper that he would be interested in moving a motion for parliament to review the privilege provisions.
