Tokelau grapples with maintainence of solar power system

4:19 pm on 27 March 2013

Tokelau is working hard on measures to ensure it will be able to maintain its solar generated power system for the future.

Power Smart Solar Energy constructed and put in the panels to deliver 90 percent of Tokelau's electricity needs to its three atolls in October last year.

But the New Zealand based company is only committed to monitoring and maintaining it for the first year.

Tokelau's Apia based general manager, Joe Suveinakama, says it is a concern as they do hope to be able to maintain it themselves.

"We're dealing with a new landscape here. We're dealing with panels, we're dealing with batteries, we're dealing with capacity building, we're dealing also with energy efficiency issues. So yes maintenance has been an issue since day one."
