A former United States secretary of defense says Guam needs to be better defended in the face of threats from North Korea.
The Pentagon says it will be deploying an advanced missile defense system, which includes a truck-mounted launcher, interceptor missiles, 2 tracking radar and an integrated fire control system to Guam.
North Korea has singled out U.S. military bases in Guam and Hawaii among its potential targets in threats in recent weeks.
Bill Cohen says it is an empty threat, in that North Korea doesn't have that capability.
"But I think the United States is concerned enough to say that if they were to fire a missile, that we would have the capability, in locating that facility in Guam and elsewhere, to be able to defend Guam and Japan and elsewhere. If you have a country like North Korea, that is engaged in this kind of hyperbolic rhetoric, sending a limited capability defense capability, against a limited type of offense, makes a lot of sense."
Bill Cohen says the US is doing the right thing, to show North Korea it has the capability of defending itself.
