Sport: Fiji cricket captain hoping for final hurrah in Botswana

11:26 am on 5 April 2013

Fiji cricket captain Joe Rika is hoping for a fairytale ending in Botswana before putting down his bat in retirement.

Fiji are one of six teams competing in the World Cricket League 7 tournament, that begins at the weekend.

The top two teams will earn promotion to Division 6, while the others will stay in limbo until the ICC announces it's plans for restructuring the development leagues.

Rika says after nine years in the national team his body is telling him it's time to call it a day.

"Knees and ankle injuries that have hampered my season haven't helped obviously and I think it's about time I do my best for this side, try and get promotion and give a better opportunity for young guys coming up to play top level cricket."

Fiji open their tournament on Saturday against Nigeria.
