Vanuatu recalls ambassador to China over extravagance

7:49 pm on 5 April 2013

Vanuatu's government has decided to recall the ambassador to China, Dennis Nai, because his extravangant spending is misrepresenting Vanuatu.

This has been announced by the Prime Minister Moana Carcasses Kalosil who also confirmed the termination of controversial businesswoman Thi Tham Goiset as roving ambassador to Russia and Eastern countries.

Mr Carcasses says given that Vanuatu is a Least Developed Country and needs help from donors like China, he wonders what Beijing thinks of Mr Nai's extravagance.

"The ambassador is driving a Jaguar at the cost of 170-thousand dollars, his family has a big Mercedes and he's renting a mansion. For those reasons, we have decided to recall the ambassador, just to ask him if he's in Beijing to serve the people of Vanuatu or to serve yourself?"

Meanwhile, the council of ministers has also announced the termination of Attorney General Ishmael Kalsakau.
