Calls for American Samoa govt to address transportation needs

A businessman on Manu'a says the American Samoa government must act on addressing local transportation needs instead of just talking about it.

The only Inter Island plane which flies between American Samoa's main island of Tutuila and Ta'u Island in Manu'a remains grounded in Samoa, awaiting maintenance.

And since early March, the MV Sili boat, which sails between Pago Pago and the Manu'a islands has also been waiting for repairs, but now due to be fixed midweek.

Ta'u store owner, Ale Filoialii, says residents have had to put up with unreliable transport for years, and not enough is being done to find permanent solutions.

He says his stores are fast running low on goods to sell, like rice, frozen foods and sugar.

"The last time the boat was here, and that's the boat from the other islands in Samoa, and it was here about almost a month ago and that was the last time we got some stuff from Pago Pago. So we're still waiting about for the MV Sili boat for Manu'a and also the Inter Island airline, so it's really bad right now."
