The US Ambassador to Papua New Guinea says there is much that can be done to address gender based violence in the country.

The ambassador is visiting the Highlands for his first time since his arrival in the country in December.

Walter North says there are gifted and energetic Papua New Guinean women and men working in the area of violence against women.

"They're the ones taking the leadership and trying to do something about it. We're able to help with some ideas to connect them to best practices internationally and to link them up with other people working in the area. But they are the real champions and heroes."

Ambasaddor Walter North says he has met with people working with victims of violence and been inspired.
