Nauru, which has a goal to produce 50 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources, has been told the cost of solar power production is now about the same as diesel, but will soon be much cheaper.

A renewable energy specialist has been on the island this month to hold commmunity awareness sessions as the government wants to boost solar and wind energy production.

Dr Herbert Wade highlighted the benefits of renewable energy and discussed ways to cut the use of diesel fuel, which is costing the Nauru Utilities Corporation more than seven million US dollars a year.

The government's plans for renewables would require large scale financing from international sources and up to about ten hectares of land where the solar panels can be sited.
