Former Vanuatu top cop pulls out of reconciliation deal

1:33 pm on 16 April 2013

Vanuatu's former police commissioner, Joshua Bong, says he will have no part in a reconciliation planned by the government.

The Prime Minister Moana Carcassses has announced that the government will facilitate a customary reconciliation between the new commissioner, Arthur Caulton, and Mr Bong, who was his predecessor.

This comes after a split in the force last year saw charges of mutiny levelled against both men.

Mr Bong says there can be no reconciliation until reports on last September's termination of his contract as police commissioner are released.

And he says a charge of alleged mutiny by Mr Caulton is still pending.

Mr Bong says under police protocol, the handing on of the Commissioner's Sword by the outgoing commissioner to his successor has not been properly conducted.

After Mr Bong's removal from office, 13 police were suspended from duties for six months, but re-instated last month.

Mr Bong says his stand is for the independence and neutrality of the Police Service Commission and the Vanuatu Police Force.
