New University set for PNG Highlands

4:48 am on 17 April 2013

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Office of Higher Education is to begin preparatory work for a new university in the Highlands region.

The newspaper, The National, reports that Peter O'Neill hasn't specified where the new Highlands university would be but says the current demand for tertiary education in PNG has exposed a lack of space in existing institutions.

He says universities and training colleges around the country will be renovated so that they are restored as the country's highest learning institutions.

Mr O'Neill has also indicated that administrations at PNG's oldest universities - University of Technology and University of Papua New Guinea - are to be reviewed in order to weed out a culture of inefficiency, nepotism and complacency.
