Pacific politicians gather in Wellington to exchange ideas

12:56 pm on 18 April 2013

More than 60 Pacific politicians and leaders are gathering in Wellington for a parliamentary forum.

The forum was organised by New Zealand's foreign affairs, defence and trade select committee.

Megan Whelan is there.

"The parliamentarians were welcomed to Parliament with speeches and waiata from New Zealand MPs. Today they will observe New Zealand's Parliament debate Pacific issues. Over the next four days the parliamentarians will then discuss topics including the role of parliament, the media, environmental issues and the representation of women. The chair of the select committee, John Hayes, says it is an opportunity to promote strong and stable government in the region. He says while ministers and leaders meet often, it is rare for new parliamentarians from around the region to exchange ideas."
