Solomons opposition calling for independent inquiry into police leadership

10:24 am on 19 April 2013

The Solomon Islands opposition is calling for an independent national Police Commission to oversee the leadership of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.

Opposition leader, Dr Derek Sikua, says it should be comprised of retired police commissioners and judges of integrity from each of the country's nine provinces.

Dr Sikua says the commission should be tasked with ensuring the force is well staffed, managed and led by Solomon Islanders.

The opposition also want a nationwide survey and a oreferendum on whether the police should be re-armed.

He says Guadalcanal is one province that is hesitant about a re-arming.

Dr Sikua says there should also be awareness campaigns launched to explain the change.
