A Solomon Islands MP has called for police not to chew betel nut or smoke while on the job.
John Maneniaru says these sorts of activities are partly to blame for the police losing the confidence and respect of the people.
Speaking during the debate on the Police Bill, he also criticised the police for their general appearance, their behaviour and attitudes and their low standard of dress.
Mr Maneniaru says in the worst case scenario, officers look no different than the boys on the street.
He says he wants the police to revitalise their code of conduct.
