A prominent Samoan musician has been sentenced to 19 years in jail for sex offences.

Peti Key, who was a former police officer, has been convicted of one charge of rape, one charge of attempted rape and charges of assault and resisting police.

Justice Ida Malosi handed the 43 year old a 19 year prison sentence, at the Supreme Court in Samoa.

The charges were filed by the police after two women filed complaints.

The judge took into account that Key was a first offender and a letter from the Prime Minister, praising the defendant's musical talent.
