American Samoa's Congressman works on tax credit incentives proposal

10:49 am on 24 April 2013

The American Samoa Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin is working with the new administration on a proposal to provide tax credit incentives for businesses in American Samoa.

At present, only StarKist Samoa is eligible for the tax breaks, but the congressman is hoping that the incentives will also be applicable to any US and local business that invests in the territory.

Faleomavaega says he is trying to push such a proposal through Congress with the hope that it will be in place before the end of the year.

"The sooner the better because we're talking about tax reforms... there are all kinds of major issues going on in Washington right now. The problem is that there is just as much divisiveness in the Congress, I mean the democrats, republicans, tax issues, economic issues, budget issues -it's a pretty bad mix."
