The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme has launched a scholarship in honour of prominent Samoan conservationist, Lui Bell.

The Lui Bell Post-Graduate Scholarship for Marine Species Conservation, which is worth up to 20 thousand US dollars, will be awarded up to Pacific islanders undertaking studies focussing on threatened marine species such turtles, cetaceans, dugongs and sharks.

The SPREP director, David Sheppard, says Mr Bell was a world expert and his achievements will stand as a beacon for marine conservation in the Pacific region for many years to come.

He says Mr Bell was the architect of the Samoa Exclusive Economic Zone.
