New university planned in PNG Southern Highlands

3:09 pm on 25 April 2013

A planned new university in Papua New Guinea is to be built in the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's electorate of Ialibu in Southern Highlands.

Mr O'Neill announced the Government would build a new university in the Highlands at a recent graduation ceremony at the University of Papua New Guinea.

The proposal is to go before the National Executive Council later this week.

Accordinng to the NBC, the acting Education Minister and Minister for Finance, James Marape, says Ialibu has been chosen because it is in a more central location in the upper Highlands region, and landowners have made land available.

Mr Marape says the site will be just 60 kilometres from the LNG project's fibre optic cable, which will enable the university to access the internet and other online facilities.
