Tahiti's Vernier backs A Tia Porinetia

The small French Polynesian party advocating much closer ties with France has called on its backers to support the A Tia Porinetia party in this month's run-off election for a new territorial assembly.

The RRPP's leader, Emile Vernier, has told local television he cannot support any of the other two parties through to the run-off.

He says the Union For Democracy is for independence and the Tahoeraa Huiraatira of Gaston Flosse has corrupt politicians.

Mr Vernier was the sole party leader to propose French Polynesia become a department of France, saying decades of autonomy have failed.

The Tahoeraa dominated the first round of voting despite its leader having been given several sentences for corruption, with all but one of them being appealed.
