A partial curfew is now in force for children under the age of 15 in the French Polynesian capital in a bid to reduce delinquency.
The Nouvelles de Tahiti says the measure was announced by the mayor of Papeete at the beginning of the year and has now come into force at weekends and on the eve of a public holiday.
It means that between 11 at night and five in the morning, those under 15 years of age are only allowed to be in the city centre if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The curfew is in response to gangs of children coming into town from the wider urban area and being involved in assaults, thefts and other crimes.
In French Polynesia, youths accounted for 14 percent of all reported crime, which is a slightly lower figure than in mainland France.
