Nauru Supreme Court may decide if Parliament should be dissolved

6:44 am on 3 May 2013

The president of Nauru is considering legal action to force the speaker of parliament to dissolve the institution and allow the country to go to elections.

Nauru has been in political flux for weeks with the last several sessions of parliament stymied by the lack of a quorum.

The group around President Sprent Dabwido believes his advice of a dissolution two weeks ago should have been accepted after seven days since the rest of the legislature could not muster the numbers to debate it.

However the speaker Godfrey Thoma doesn't agree and will not dissolve the parliament without the debate.
