Discussion of Pacific media ombudsman on World Press Freedom Day

3:26 pm on 3 May 2013

Pacific journalists gathered in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara are using World Press Freedom Day to advance the concept of a regional media ombudsman.

The president of the Media Association of Solomon Islands says reporters from across the region along with representatives of Pacific media organisations have been attending workshops for the past couple of days.

George Herming says the aim of a regional ombudsman, which has been one of the main topics of discussion, is to raise the profile of the Pacific's media.

"In terms of its accountability and transparency as well as to set a regional code of ethics for all the regional media. And hopefully that should be concluded by this evening with a document that is signed here in Honiara to allow the members to pursue the concept further in coming years."

George Herming says there is considerable support among journalists for a regional media ombudsman with some wanting the position established as soon as possible.
