CNMI Governor seeks talks with Obama

3:13 pm on 6 May 2013

The governor of the CNMI, Eloy S. Inos, is initiating consultations with United States President Barack Obama to discuss the US military's plans to develop live-fire training areas on Pagan and Tinian.

The Covenant 902 talks will also cover the federal takeover of local immigration, 37 years since the establishment of the unique relationship between the Northern Mariana Islands and the United States.

Mr Inos says he will be sending a letter to Mr Obama this week, asking the president to appoint his representative for the talks.

Section 902 of the CNMI's Covenant with the United States allows for periodic consultations between the Commonwealth and federal governments on all matters affecting the relationship between them.

Either party can initiate the consultations.

The representatives to those discussions are appointed directly by the CNMI governor and the United States president.
