PNG truck drivers at LNG gas site in Hela go on strike

10:59 am on 7 May 2013

Drivers of trucking companies contracted to work at the Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas project site in Hela Province have gone on strike.

The National newspaper reports the drivers walked off their job after two of their colleagues were badly bashed and a Guard Dog Security escort vehicle was taken by locals in Southern Highlands at the weekend.

The drivers are asking PNG LNG developer ExxonMobil and the national government to fix the road immediately as they have become victims of assault, robbery and looting when the deteriorating conditions of the Highlands Highway have forced them to stop or slow down.

More than 60 semi-trailers are sitting idle at the Curtain Brothers camp in Tari while drivers and crews strike.
