Sport: Manu Samoa name squad for South Africa tour

11:07 am on 7 May 2013

Samoa have announced a largely Northern Hemisphere based squad for next month's rugby tour to South Africa.

17 of the 31-strong squad come from French, British and Spanish clubs, with the rest hailing from, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Samoa.

Six new caps have been included in the 31 strong squad, including Hurricanes duo Jack Lam and Alapati Leiua along with Waratahs halfback Auvasa Faleali'i.

Hulking winger Alesana Tuilagi also earns his first call-up since the 2011 World Cup however last year's captain David Lemi has not been included in the initial squad, with two players still to be added.

Head coach Stephen Betham says they've tried to pick a team with a mix of youth and experience, but says unavailability has also played a part in the final make-up.

"We've had a lot of that issue. Like I said we can't really fool around with the boys contracts so, if they're not available, basically it opens the door for someone else and hopefully they take the opportunity. At the end of the day that's their bread and butter and we don't want to impose on that, we just have to make the best of what we have. We're just trying to widen our base so, come 2014, we have a broad base where we can have a good selection base from."

Stephen Betham says he's also tried not disrupt the Manu Sevens team too much ahead of next month's World Cup.

There's a few players in the sevens which we've tried not to touch on - the ones that are basically already in contention and playing in the series at the moment. We've sort of tried to select new faces into the team so we don't touch some of those players - we know how important it is for the sevens to prepare as well. It's just unfortunate that some of the other players who are needed in the sevens will still have to play fifteens.

Manu Samoa will play test matches against Scotland and Italy next month, as well as a third test.
