Fiji's Rotuma progressing towards becoming fully organic

9:47 am on 8 May 2013

The Executive Chairman of the Rotuma Export and Marketing Company, Hiagi Foraete, says organic certification for Fiji's northernmost island will be good for its people as well as trade.

Rotuma banned agricultural chemicals in July last year and the island is working towards being able to have its produce certified under the region's Participatory Guarantee System.

The system is a peer-reviewed, low cost, locally-owned guarantee of organics.

Mr Foraete says Rotuma's plan is not only to get premium prices for its produce but also to ensure clean water for its people.

"We don't have rivers. Our water is from aquifers and we believe it is our responsibility and obligation to protect that for our future generations."

Mr Foraete says Rotuma is eyeing up the hotel market in Fiji for its organic produce.
