The Papua New Guinea Ports Corporation Limited says the 19-point-5 million US dollar revamping of Alotau port is expected to give the country's economy a boost when cruise ships visit Milne Bay.

The National newspaper reports the company and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority are rebuilding the port at the request of Carnival Australia, one of its biggest cruise ship operators.

Work has already begun on the project and when completed would add 290 metres of berthing space making Alotau the country's biggest port of call for cruise ships.

Its chief executive officer, Stanley Alphonse, says the project covers the construction of new berths and new deck structures.
