Solomons acting police chief emphasises importance of accuracy

1:33 pm on 13 May 2013

The acting commissioner of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Juanita Matanga says regardless of what media outlets report, the people must be accurately informed about what is happening in the force.

The comment follows reports in the Solomon Star newspaper of a split in the force, along with threats of protest action over the somewhat controversial departure of the former commissioner, John Lansley.

Ms Matanga denies both reports, saying the job of police officers is to ensure the community lives in safety and harmony.

"We will continue to ensure that law and order is maintained, whatever is coming out from different media outlets, we respect their views. On the other hand we make sure that whatever is reported is consistent, accurate, so that our people and in particular the communities in Solomon Islands, are properly briefed."

Juanita Matanga declined to comment on whether she would like to be appointed commissioner.
