The company behind American Samoa's second tuna cannery is expecting it to be completed in 18 months.

The Samoa Tuna Processors Incorporated's new fish canning plant at Atu'u will employ more than 1,200 people and by the middle of next year the company will be hiring large numbers to man the fish processing facility.

The company is awaiting a permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers to build a seawall and to extend and repair an existing dock at the old Samoa Packing plant, which it is modernising.

The vice president of Tri Marine International, the parent company of Samoa Tuna Processors, Dan Sullican says all the work will be done by local contractors.
