Papua New Guinea police have arrested a prison officer in connection with the escape of bank robber, William Kapris.

Kapris and Raphael Walimani, who escaped on Monday from Bomana jail in Port Moresby, are still at large.

A third escapee has already been recaptured.

A woman correctional officer has been arrested and charged in aiding the three prisoners to escape.

Corporal Hilda Gajawe, a prison medical officer, is alleged to have provided them with guns and mobile phones.

She is also thought to have notified the prisoners that the guards at the main gate were unarmed.

Police say they remain confident that Kapris and Walimani will be recaptured.

They say a member of the public who was kidnapped by the three fugitives and forced to be their guide for two nights escaped on Wednesday and is now recovering from his ordeal.
