American Samoa's Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, has told a group of graduates that they need to consider the political future of the territory and its relationship with the United States.
Speaking at the American Samoa community college, he says there are some critical issues that need to be addressed in American Samoa, one of them being the form of government heading into the future.
"We can not continue forever as an unorganised and unincorporated territory of the United States. While there have been obstacles over, and over, and over with our current status it appears that there are still those that prefer the status quo."
Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin says the territory's consitution has become an archaic document holding the territory back on some of the most critical issues vital to the development of American Samoa.
He says American Samoa needs to be mindful to protect its basic rights as a people with a unique culture and traditions.
