The Chief Executive Officer of the Grasberg mine in Papua, where a tunnel collapse killed 28 workers, says around 200 cubic metres of collapsed material filled the classroom in which 40 workers were undergoing safety training.
The last of the bodies was removed from the rubble on Tuesday night, and Richard Adkerson of Freeport McMoRan has been in Jakarta speaking with media and the Indonesian government.
He says the training room was packed with employees on the second day of a scheduled training program and the centre point of the collapse was located exactly above the classroom and was far from the production area.
The company will conduct a safety review of all underground work areas, as well as an internal review of the accident, and will cooperate fully with Indonesian authorities, who have ordered the mine closed and an independent review.
