Two former lawmakers in American Samoa have called for the re-establishment of an investigative arm of the United States Government.
Galumalemana Satele and Pulu Ae Ae Jr., have requested the governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga to seek the re-establishment of the Interior Department's Office of Inspector General, which was closed down in Pago Pago more than three decades ago.
The request has been prompted by media reports of abuse of authority and misuse of government funds.
The Samoa News has reported on lavish spending of a 20 million US dollar loan that the government obtained from the Employees Retirement Fund, as well as tens of thousands of dollars spent by the Fono over the last six months, with little or no accountability.
The letter also applauded Lolo's action in creating the Office of Fraud Prevention and Investigation under the governor's office as a step towards more transparency and accountability.
