CNMI probes return of wanted former AG

The Attorney General of the Northern Marianas says his office is investigating how the former attorney general, Edward Buckingham, managed to get through Saipan's International airport without being arrested.

Mr Buckingham arrived from the US state of Colorado, where he was arrested earlier this month on charges filed by the CNMI's Office of the Public Auditor.

When he arrived, no law enforcement agency served him with his outstanding arrest warrant and he later handed himself in at a Department of Public Safety office.

The Attorney General, Patrick San Nicolas, says the investigation will look into how the CNMI responds to returning fugitives.

Meanwhile, Mr Buckingham's lawyer is asking for bail conditions to be eased so he can return to Colorado to receive medical treatment and make a court appearance there on June the 10th.
