Bailed former CNMI AG appeals for return to US

The former attorney general of the Northern Marianas, Edward Buckingham, has appealed to the Superior Court in Saipan to be allowed to return to the US state of Colorado, where he was arrested earlier this month.

Through his lawyer, Mr Buckingham presented a signed waiver of extradition in which he voluntarily waives his right to formal extradition proceedings in Colorado.

The lawyer, Brian Sers Nicholas, asked the court to modify Mr Buckingham's bail conditions to allow him to travel for medical treatment and to appear in the Jefferson County court on June the 10th.

But the prosecutor for the Office of the Public Auditor, George Hasselback, opposes the motion, saying he can't trust Mr Buckingham and neither should the court.

The Saipan court has placed Mr Buckingham's request under advisement and set a trial date for February the 3rd.
