Cable between Samoas and Hawaii in good shape

The Chief Executive Officer of the American Samoa Hawaii Cable says he is optimistic about the lifespan of the undersea cable between the Samoas and Hawaii.

Adolfo Montenegro says data collected at the time the ASH Cable was installed, particularly in the measurement of the active components in the undersea repeaters, showed the system was performing much better than expected.

He says based on this information and the fact that the ASH Cable system has not sustained any failures since its re-deployment, experts estimate the system will be good for at least two or three years beyond 2019.

Mr Montenegro says the ASH Cable is currently at slightly over 60 percent utilisation and at this rate expects the system to reach full capacity by 2016.
