Tokelau holding workshops to bring down sexually transmitted diseases

Tokelau is working to cut the levels of sexually transmitted diseases and to improve the ability of the atolls to respond to infections.

The Tokelau Health Department is conducting workshops, which are facilitated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, to find effective methods to encourage the use of protection and ways to prevent STIs.

The director of health, Silivia Alapati, says there is an increasing prevalence of STIs in Tokelau and they hope the workshops will help develop programmes so people make appropriate choices for their lives and not put themselves at risk.

There will also be a workshop to teach medical staff how to carry out medical laboratory testing for STIs because currently such a service is not available in Tokelau.
