A long time MP in Nauru, re-elected in Saturday's poll, says the six new MPs hold the key to political stability in the coming term.

The new parliament meets today to elect a speaker and then a president, and there are hopes today's meeting will end an impasse that has lasted for many months.

Baron Waqa says the new members want a parliament that can perform and bring stability so the term last its full three years.

He says he has heard similar sentiments in the past but this time it is different.

"Because some of the members who have gone out to be replaced by these new ones - I think they are more eager to see a functioning government and parliament."
