Torrential rain in the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia has caused flood damage in excess of two million US dollars.

The rain fell within a few hours and inundated the township of Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa.

The president, Gaston Flosse, and one of his ministers flew from Tahiti to inspect the damage.

Two commissions have been set up to assist those struck by the storm.
