Teams counting military vets in American Samoa

4:42 am on 12 June 2013

Teams in American Samoa are canvassing villages to register military veterans, in an effort to get an accurate count of all those who served in the US Armed Forces, now residing in the territory.

The Veterans Affairs Officer Taua'a Sam Vaouli says the last count was done more than ten years ago.

Taua'a says there are about 4,000 registered veterans but he believes the actual number is possibly three or four times that.

He says one of the purposes of establishing accurate data is to gain more access to funds for veterans.

"We can very much help in asking for more funds from the Federal Government as of right now there are various funds that we can ask for veterans where a lot of those benefits that will be used for the VA."

More than 100 people trained under the National Emergency Grant Programme have been hired for the exercise.
