New Catholic bishop welcomed to American Samoa

The new Catholic bishop for American Samoa is visiting the territory this week before he relocates from his native New Zealand to begin his new leadership positon.

Bishop-elect Peter Brown who replaces Bishop John Quinn Weitzel as the Bishop of Samoa-Pago Pago said he was very impressed with the warm welcome he received from the government and the diocese since arriving last week.

He said he is very much aware of the many years Bishop Quinn has served the diocese there and admitted to being wary as he will be filling the shoes of someone who has made a huge difference in the lives of Catholics in American Samoa.

The new bishop said he does nto plan to make major changes for the time being.

A date for the consecration of the new bishop has not been set but he said it may be held sometime in August.
