The family of a New Zealand police officer killed while in custody in Tonga are seeking a six-figure sum in compensation.

Counties Manukau Constable Kali Fungavaka died in August after receiving fatal injuries while being held in a police cell in Nuku'alofa .

He had been arrested on what the police say was a minor drunkenness charge while in Tonga for a family funeral.

Five police officers and one civilian were charged over his death.

A lawyer, Kahungunu Barron-Afeaki SC, is seeking compensation, redress and an apology on behalf of Mr Fungavaka's five children.
