Police in the Indonesian region of Papua have arrested 14 people following an attack on a police district headquarters building in Pegunungan Bintang.

A police spokesperson says six people have been named as suspects and the other eight are witnesses.

The Jakarta Globe reports that a mob armed with machetes and arrows rounded on the police building on Sunday, setting it and several vehicles on fire after claims police had beaten a drunk man.

The paper reports the catalyst for the incident was when four police officers were called out to a local village on Sunday morning to deal with three allegedly drunk men.

It says what followed is not clear, but police say one man tried to take an officer's rifle and the officer responded by beating him before the man fled, leading to the dissent.
