PNG funeral home asked to stop open fire body burning

City officials and police in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea have ordered a funeral home to stop cremating bodies on an open fire.

The Dove Funeral Home was burning unclaimed bodies left at the morgue of the Port Moresby General Hospital.

When police and city health inspectors visited the property this week following complaints by neighbours, they were stunned to find bodies were not being burnt in an enclosed incinerator.

The National Capital District Commission's deputy manager, Honk Kiap, ordered the funeral home to stop the activity until a proper facility was built.

He says what they were doing was totally wrong.

Mr Kiap says in the past the NCDC has conducted mass burials for unclaimed bodies and the Hospital Board should do the same instead of having them burnt in this fashion.
