Fiji's Bainimarama special guest in Solomons celebrations

3:30 pm on 21 June 2013

The prime minister of Solomon Islands says a special invitation to his Fiji counterpart to celebrate the country's 35th independence anniversary early next month is not intended to upstage the celebrations for 10 years of the Regional Assistance Mission.

Gordon Darcy Lilo has told Pacnews that an invitation has been sent asking Commodore Frank Bainimarama to the celebrations.

The independence celebration comes two weeks before Solomon Islands marks the 10th anniversary of the arrival of the Australian led RAMSI intervention force.

Fiji, while a contributor to the RAMSI mission, is not invited to the mission's celebrations because it is suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum.

Mr Lilo says it is not about upstaging the Forum.

He told Pacnews there is still a need to thank a well recognised force and share the fact that Fiji is a member of the Pacific family.
