Sport: Big loss tough to take for Tahiti

5:33 am on 22 June 2013

Tahiti football coach Eddy Etaeta admits it was a sobering experience being on the end of a record defeat at the Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil.

The Oceania Champions were thrashed 10-nil by World and European champions Spain, who set a new record for the biggest margin of victory at the finals of an international FIFA tournament.

Tahiti have now shipped 16 goals in two matches and Eddy Etaeta says it has been a steep learning curve.

"The score here it's very hard for us - we let in a lot of goals like this is very very complicated for us and very hard. But we must accept because they are too good, too more defence of the goal like Spain, the world champions. After the game I think we can say perhaps we lost but we win the crowd with the population of the guys."

The loss ends Tahiti distant hopes of making the semi finals, although they do have one final group match against South American champions Uruguay on Monday.
